License To Wed (Megan's Choice)
Sorry for the break in service, there have been some problems my end of the Internet. So we start again carrying on where we left off and that would be another shot at a Megan's Choice movie, this week it just happens to be License To Wed. A romantic comedy featuring Robin Williams, Mandy Moore and John Krasinski, now to go through this rom/com I shall be testing a new style that can only be used with this genre of movie.
Boy meets girl: Ben (John Krasinski) bumps into Sadie (Mandy Moore) in a coffee shop after (yep you guessed it) he makes a fool of himself.
They fall in Love: They fall madly in love over a series of sped up (because your man is going to watch this, he doesn't need to see too much mush) dates. They then move in together showing some hilarious (!) moments where she discovers those new and interesting things about him.
The proposal: Now admittedly this doesn't happen in every Rom/Com but some do, Ben proposes to Sadie at her parents wedding anniversary and she says yes, but demands (that's right here it goes) to get married in her family church.
Complications: They arrive at the church where they meet Reverend Frank (Robin Williams) who will be helping them move into the life of marriage he discusses that they will have tot go on a marriage preparation course so that he knows they are ready. Then when setting a date they hit a snag (uh-oh) when it turns out they will have to get married in three weeks. they attend the marriage course where they have to have pretend arguments, understand each other and so on. Buttons then start to be pushed when Frank gets Ben to participate in a word association game in which he offends Sadies's mother. Things keep getting worse as Frank puts the couple on (what I would call and I am planning my own wedding at the minute) such undue stress that it makes me wince at points.
The bit where the man ruins it all(!): Ben tries to find out some dirt of Frank so that he can bring it up and make Sadie see just how tormenting he is. Having found out what he feels is some juicy information they head to the dress rehearsal and brings it up to which Frank shows that it was a kind thing that he had done to allow a persecuted women into the country. Having not written his vows and wasted his time Sadie dumps Ben.
The make up: Frank tells Sadie to go on her honeymoon with her family to which she agrees and ponders how she could have gone so wrong. Ben realises just how special she is and how much of an idiot he has been (obviously) and chases after her (discovering Frank has been spying on him the whole time). Ben then surprises Sadie and writes his vows in the sand by her hotel, they both realise just how foolish they have been and Frank marries them in Jamaica.
And they live happily ever after...
Storyline: I mean this is only slightly different from the story lines in other Rom/Com's and I feel that watching this makes me feel that no one has any inspiration in Hollywood they see someone else do something that makes a lot of money and Ctrl-c/Ctrl-v and make millions off it someone should find out who made the first Rom/Com because I think they would make billions if the sued for copyright of the storyline.
Cast: Now I like our happy couple Ben and Sadie I think that they are played really well and the two actors definitely have that chemistry that makes us believe that they could be together as a couple. Now Robin Williams, I love him as a comedian I think he is hilarious and in Aladdin I think his Genie is the best Disney character but as an actor...I admit I haven't seen all his films but... he is annoying, unfunny and in this movie to quote MaryAnn Johanson "Williams' character is "creepy" and more worthy of a horror-film villain than a comic lead."
Genre: Romantic Comedy well I think i have worked my way through my feelings for this particular genre...wait till next week when I can have another crack at it.
Overall: Some of the most mediocre comedy i have seen in a movie as a fiance I feel scared that this could happen to me and that is not something you want to be thinking about while you are watching a movie that you intend to enjoy. The acting is OK but it leaves you feeling that you want more from this movie like it could be so much better if they had thought about what they are doing. This film is not a recommended view and if you need a reason you didn't read my comments above, case closed bring on the next movie please.
